Q.  I think I’m too old to start using a computer.
A.  You’re never too old to use a computer.  If you know how to read and write, you’ll be fine.
You don’t even have to write; there are special programs that allow you to speak into your computer and turn your voice into written words.

Q.  What’s the best kind of computer to get?
A.  It all depends on what you want to do, and it also depends upon your flexibility and visual acuity.  You can get laptops or desk tops, and there are also special computers for people with physical difficulties.

Q.  What if my fingers are not very flexible?
A.  There are specially designed keyboards with bright colors and larger keys.  They make it easier to see the keys and press the right ones.

Q.  My eyes getting weak – how can I use a computer?
A.  If you have vision difficulty you can get large screens and, as with any computer, you can always make the words look bigger on the screen.   There are lots of folks younger than us who have weak eyes.

Q.  I want to see pictures of my grandchildren – can I?
A.  Of course you can.   You can send (download) them from your camera to your computer and then save them in files.  You can also receive them attached to an email.

Q. How do I talk to my family with my computer?
A.  The most popular way is to use a program called Skype.  Bring up your Internet screen, type in (or click on) www.Skype.com  and follow the instructions to download the program.  Skype allows you to talk with a single person or a group of people.  You can also use video Skype to see who you are talking to, but you need a webcam on your computer.

Q.  What is a webcam?
A.  A webcam is a little camera that is integrated into your computer just at the top of the screen.  Look on the top frame of your computer and you will see a little round circle.  That is the lens of your webcam.

Q.  Why is it called a webcam?
A.  Because it sends the signal (image) across the web (the World Wide Web or Internet).

Q.  What can I do with a webcam?
A.  You can have live real-time conversations with members of your family.  Imagine – you can see that new little grandchild almost as soon as he or she is born!
You can make a video and send it via email or post it onto YouTube for anyone to see.
Webcams are also used for security.  They can be placed in a home, an office, or a public place and left running so that you can monitor what is happening there.
If you look on the Internet, you will find public webcams from almost every town and city.  It is a tourist service so that you can see the place you are going to visit.

Q. What is YouTube?
A. YouTube is a popular video-sharing website that lets anyone upload short videos for private or public viewing.

Q.  Should I get a laptop or a desktop?
A.  You can find out which is best for you by clicking here.  To summarize what it says:
If you want to carry your computer around with you – either through the house or to another location, then a laptop computer would be ideal for you.
If you have the room and are content to set up your computer in one place in your home, get a desk top.  It used to be that laptops were not as powerful as desktops but now, depending upon the type of computer and size of the memory, laptops can be just as efficient as desktops.
